46th Munich Security Conference puts focus on action
Once again, a large number of high-ranking heads of state and government, ministers and heads of international organizations from all over the world are expected to attend the 46th Munich Security Conference from 05 to 07 February 2010.
Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle met elder statesmen from Germany and the US who are working to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. Westerwelle expressed his support for the commitment of the eight disarmament veterans, who include Richard von Weizsäcker and Henry Kissinger.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that Michael Haneke’s "The White Ribbon," Germany’s nomination for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, is a contender for the foreign-language film Oscar. Four additional German co-productions have also received nominations.

The Afghanistan Conference in London has agreed on a comprehensive approach to move forward with the further development of the country. On the road to more Afghan ownership, the conference participants pledged more civilian aid as well as intensified work to develop the Afghan security organs. Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is very happy with the results, and described the Conference outcome as a turning point.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner said that the Holocaust must not become a barrier against the belief in decency but should forever serve as a warning. “If there is a collective voice for the millions of European Jews, this voice calls upon us to look ahead."

The German Government’s emergency aid for Haiti now totals about $21 million. The Federal Agency for Disaster Relief is supplying 60,000 people a day with drinking water. The German Red Cross has sent a mobile hospital in addition to its mobile health clinic.
